From Kate Middleton to the Secretary of Defense, It's All About Trees
You may have missed the story of trees in the big news of
the week…
First, the Royal Wedding, of course!
It seems like
the towering majesty of Westminster Abbey needed a bit of a natural
touch.
Six English field maples and two hornbeams were placed
inside the Cathedral for the wedding ceremony.
According
to reports, the English field maples symbolize humility and reserve, and
the hornbeam signifies resilience.
These 20 feet beauties were placed along the nave inside the Abbey so Kate Middletown could walk through an “avenue of trees.”
And big news on this side of the Atlantic was the appointment of Leon Panetta to be Secretary of Defense. While spending lots of time inside the beltway, Mr. Panetta actually has another life – as a tree farmer. Walnut trees to be exact.
When talking about his "nutty background", Mr. Panetta said, "When I got elected to Congress, my father said, 'You know, you've been well-trained to go to Washington. You've been dodging nuts all your life.'
Panetta's immigrant parents bought the walnut tree farm after World War II and Mr. Panetta still owns it in Monterey, California.
