Research on Ecosystem Services
  • In 2008, AFF funded research at Oregon State University focused on ecosystem services and family woodlands. The key findings of the research seminar analyzed key policy objectives necessary for successful ecosystem market implementation. A report on the OSU research can be found here.

  • The UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment was completed and published in 2005. The Assessment analyzes the “consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and the scientific basis for action needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of those systems and their contribution to human well-being.”

  • The H. John Heinz III Center recently published The State of the Nation’s Ecosystems in an effort to understand the current condition of our natural resources. Broken into various indicators, such as climate, wildlife, and fiber, the report analyzes the plethora of ecosystem services.

  • Ecosystem Marketplace developed a comprehensive overview of overview of current markets and trends. Payment for Ecosystem Services: Market Profiles examines a variety of different types of ecosystem market draws on the PES Matrix, which is under constant revision and updating.

  • Another Ecosystem Marketplace publication, Integrated Solutions, looks at non-carbon markets. The compilation is based on the 2009 Ghana Katoomba Conference, which was designed to strengthen and stimulate ecosystem markets around the world.

  • The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit focused on helping other nonprofits and philanthropic organizations develop strategies to accelerate social change, published a report, The State of Ecosystem Services, in an effort to examine the current context, challenges associated with the various approaches, and the potential for impact.
