May 31, 2008 - Conservation Forestry Field Day for Family Forest Owners. The Coward Family LP Tree Farm in partnership with the American Forest Foundation’s Center for Conservation Solutions, Clemson University Extension Service, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Forest Service will host the field day. The Field Day will highlight and recognize the longleaf pine habitat restoration and conservation accomplishments of the Coward Family LP and discuss the forest management strategies used to ensure long-term economic and ecological benefits.

Family forest owners will tour the Coward Family LP property and learn from resource professionals about conservation forestry management for declining species dependent upon fire-maintained southern pine communities in South Carolina. The 530-acre property has been in the Coward family for three generations. Multiple-use management, including timber production and conservation of wildlife habitat, has always been a guiding principle. Prescribed fire has recently been reintroduced to control hardwoods and promote natural regeneration. Additionally, the planted loblolly and slash pine stands are in the early stages of being gradually converted to longleaf pine by clearcutting and planting longleaf. Field day attendees will be encouraged to engage in similar conservation forestry efforts on their own lands.

September 10-11, 2008
- Market-Based Conservation Incentives Workshop: Strategies for Family Forest Owner Participation in Biodiversity and Water Markets. CCS is hosting a workshop on September 10th and 11th, 2008, at the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, MD, bringing together organizations and individuals who want to help develop strategies to increase family forest owner involvement in conservation using market-based approaches. This first of its kind national workshop is intended to fill a void and start an ongoing dialogue focused on how family forest owners can capitalize on the ecological and economic benefits of ecosystem services markets. In addition, this event will provide a networking opportunity for environmental professionals and others interested in utilizing markets for long-term forest conservation and management on family forest lands.
